CHILTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

A Chilton County teenager has never forgotten how donated blood saved his sister's life 13 years ago so Monday, he held a blood drive to pay it forward.

Soon after she was born, Keele Smitherman needed a blood transfusion to survive. Neither of Keeley's parents could give blood.

"It was very scary," her mother, Jaime Smitherman, said. "It was by God's grace someone gave blood."

It's something Darrion Smitherman, her brother, always remembered. Today, Keeley is doing fine and even attended her brother's blood drive.

"I think about what it would be like if I wasn't here. I'm thankful for that [person] that gave me blood," Keeley Smitherman said.

Smitherman has given blood before, but this is the first drive he's has organized. He encouraged all of his friends at Chilton County High School to come out and give.

Community members attended as well. While FOX6 News was at the blood drive, we met Donny Martin, who has donated 20 gallons of blood over 56 years.

Smitherman has another blood drive planned for the fall and he's hoping his family's story will inspire others.
