CHILTON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

The Chilton County Commission has approved a one-cent sales tax referendum that, if approved by the public, will help pay for a new county hospital.

The only local hospital has been closed since October 2012 and the commission believes this is the best way to raise funds for a new facility.

Now that they've approved a referendum, the state legislature will have to pass a bill allowing the county to hold a public vote on the sales tax.
