TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Tuscaloosa County School System Superintendent Dr. Liz Swinford has confirmed that a teacher accused of incest and other sexual abuses is on leave.

Anessa Dawn Olive Ferguson, 37, was arrested Wednesday, July 3 after a grand jury returned indictments for incest, rape second degree, sodomy second degree and sexual abuse first degree.

"The school system takes this arrest very seriously," Swinford said in a press release.

The school system says the former Maxwell Elementary School first grade teacher was placed on leave by former Superintendent Dr. Dan Butler.

Their statement that the investigation did not originate within the school system matches what authorities have said. The Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office has stated that the victim came forward with other family members to make the complaint.

Court documents show Ferguson, who lives in Tuscaloosa County, is out on $25,000 bond and has an arraignment scheduled for Sept. 6 in Tuscaloosa.
