BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A system is moving through the area right now, bringing very gusty winds and lots of cloud to ground lightning.

The system is moving in from the northwest to the southeast. A flash flood warning has been issued for Jefferson and Shelby counties until 9:30 p.m.

There is a confirmed house fire on Southview Terrace in Hoover and authorities believe lightning is to blame. The manager of Superior Grill on Highway 280 has also told FOX6 News that the westbound lanes have been closed due to flooding. There are also reports of trees down along Hilltop Road on the Bessemer/Hoover city line.

In addition, dispatch has confirmed to FOX6 News that a person was struck by lightning in the parking lot of Staples on Highway 31 in Hoover. FOX6 News is sending a crew that way and will have updates as they become available.

Expect lots of rain in central Alabama, as there is a significant amount of instability in the atmosphere. You can also expect torrential downpours. Watch out for ponding on the roads or minor flooding if you have to be out driving this evening.

Your morning commute could be stormy, as well.

Chief Meteorologist J-P Dice Watch is watching the system and will have updates throughout the evening on FOX6 News through 6:30 p.m. and beyond if needed.
