The following comments were generated from an editorial by FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, which first aired on Tuesday, July 9, 2013...
I was one of those parents that was in and out of prison all my life... According to society and statistics my children should have led the same life I led because they were products of my environment. Because I didn't want my children to live that life and wanted better for them., I put myself through school, I took a risk with the target on my back "felon" and I searched for jobs and worked hard at them. Sending a message to my kids that what I did in my life did not define them and that they could do anything that they set out to be. I'm proud to say through hard work and sheer determination the last two of my six children will graduate in May, they all have jobs and by God's grace we are all together!

I do think that it does begin with the parents. However, what about the kids without parents? I think that's when the community and the church has to step in and take an active role.
