A developer who is no stranger to Nashville wants to build a new skyscraper on Second Avenue that would become one of the tallest buildings in Music City.
The 32-story tower called SoBro, South of Broadway, would be the second-tallest building in Nashville.
Located on the corner of Second Avenue and Demonbreun Street, the tower would include 300 apartments, 500 parking spaces and 20,000 square feet of retail space.
The developer, Tony Giarratana, estimates it will cost $88 million to construct.
Giarratana founded Premier Parking and also developed the Cumberland apartments, the Viridian, Encore and Marquee buildings located in downtown Nashville.
It's the latest proposal for growth in a rapidly-expanding city.
Musician Mike Slusser has seen a lot of changes in downtown Nashville since he started playing along Broadway in 1998.
"The Pinnacle Building was not here. The Hilton was not here. When I got here, the Bridgestone [Arena] was only two years old," he said.
Just last week, plans were announced to build a Hyatt Regency Hotel and a Marriott Hotel elsewhere downtown.
"The hotel folks are responding to the market, and the market is demanding more hotel rooms," said Mayor Karl Dean.
Now, Giarantana plans to add space for locals, not just the tourists.
"When you stop and think about the number of apartments and condos that have been built recently, the fact that downtown Nashville is alive every night, there are things going on. I think it's a natural," Dean said.
Many of the people we spoke to downtown say they are all for new buildings as long as one thing doesn't change: the feel of Lower Broad.
"I've seen a lot of changes, but I'm still accustomed to this look right here," said Nashville resident Roger Elder.
"As long as we do that and never get rid of the Ryman, I think we're just fine," Slusser said.
