Homewood Police say a one-year-old child has passed away after being found unresponsive inside an SUV Wednesday afternoon.
Police received the call around 1:27 p.m. that a child was unresponsive inside a vehicle on 19th Street South in downtown Homewood. Paramedics reached the scene first and transported the child to Children's of Alabama where she later died.
FOX6 News has learned she was the daughter of two nail salon owners along 19th Street South. Chris Conn, who works next to the nail salon, tried to administer CPR to the little girl.
"I noticed my neighbors were in hysterics," he said. "Ran next door, found their daughter lying on the floor unresponsive. When I asked them what had happened, they said their daughter had been left in the car since 10 a.m."
Homewood Police Sgt. Andrew Didcoct says this is the first death involving a child left in a vehicle this year in the city. He says there are few, but critical, steps caregivers can take to protect a child.
"Remind parents to check their backseat before they exit their car and think twice before they...when they drop off a child or pick up a child and remember where the child is," he said.
"It's sad," Conn said. "There's nothing you can say about it. It shouldn't have happened."
