A Homewood church family is mourning the loss of a pastor's wife after she was found killed inside her Homewood home.
The Jefferson County coroner's office identifies the victim as Karen Louise Shahan, 52. She is the wife of Rev. Richard Shahan, the children and family pastor at First Baptist Church of Birmingham.
Police responded to the Shahan home at 102 Hugh Circle after co-workers called, concerned after Karen Shahan didn't show up for work at Hobby Lobby.
Officers found Shahan's body on her couch around 11:15 a.m. Tuesday. Homewood police haven't yet said how she died, but said it was apparent someone killed her.
Homewood police said Rev. Shahan was out of town when his wife's body was discovered.
Investigators aren't sure if the motive in the killing was burglary or other criminal intent. At this time there are no suspects in the case.
FBC Birmingham owns the house where the Shahans lived, in the neighborhood next to the church. At this time no one from the church is commenting on the case.
Vince Parker, a spokesperson for Hobby Lobby where Karen Shahan worked, issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the loss of one of our employees. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family."
Kathleen Fittro, a neighbor who lives a few houses up from the Shahans said on Wednesday she had not seen anyone suspicious around the neighborhood in the last couple of days. She said the neighborhood is very safe, so the new came as a surprise.
"Shocked, very shocked. Shocked and so saddened for the family," Fittro said.
"You have to trust each other and reach out with your faith and know that hopefully the pieces of the puzzle will be solved and they'll find out who did this and bring the person to justice," she added.
Homewood investigators are asking anyone with information to call their tip line at (205) 332-6262 or Crime Stoppers at (205) 254-7777.
