An Alabama man has pleaded guilty to assaulting Border Patrol agents with his car in a West Texas incident that ended in a vehicle crash that killed two people.
The Justice Department statement says 39-year-old David Steiner of Vinegar Bend, Ala., (Washington County) entered the plea before a federal magistrate in Del Rio on Wednesday.
The statement says Steiner forced a Border Patrol vehicle off the road May 25 so he could continue his escape a traffic stop near Comstock, about 30 miles northwest of Del Rio.
The agents pursued him until Steiner crashed into an oncoming vehicle, killing two people and injuring the driver.
Authorities found a stolen rifle inside Steiner's car.
If convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison for each assault charge.
