ANNISTON, AL (WBRC) -

An investigation is underway in Anniston after a teen says a nude picture she took of herself went viral. Authorities say the teen as well as those who received the picture could face charges.

Sgt. Chris Sparks with the Anniston Police Department says the original picture was taken back in May and has been circulating ever since.

Sparks won't say what school the girl attends. He describes her as a young teen.

Sgt. Sparks says the girl claims she took a nude picture of herself using a cell phone and sent it via text message to some friends. From there, it's been received and re-sent by multiple people.

A parent of a kid who received the picture saw it and called the police department, which is how the investigation started.

Anyone who receives or sends a nude picture of someone under 17 could be charged with distributing or possessing child porn. Even the girl who took the picture of herself could be charged.

"We're trying to determine who all it was sent to so we can stop it, destroy the image. Also want to make sure it does not end up in the hands of a pedophile or the internet," Sgt. Sparks said.

"I hope parents see this, recognize this [and] become more aware of what their children are doing, keep tabs on social media or technology kid have in their hands," he added.

Once the investigation is complete, the Calhoun County District Attorney's Office to determine the appropriate charges for those involved, who are all teenagers.
