Tuscaloosa police and state troopers are investigating a police chase that ended in a deadly accident.
It happened around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday near Townsend Ford on McFarland Boulevard East in front of Super Skate.
The crash shut down part of Highway 82 for several hours. Tuscaloosa police say the chase began when officers responded to a robbery call.
When officers arrived to an apartment complex on Skyland Blvd., they saw the suspects get into a white SUV and drive away.
Officers say James Champion, 30, was the driver. He has been charged with eluding police, leaving the scene of an accident and probation violation. So far, he is the only person facing criminal charges.
State troopers say 29-year-old Ronald Hoover Jr. was killed in the accident. He was ejected from the SUV and pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say the white SUV hit one car on Skyland Blvd. Two police cars followed it as it turned south on Highway 82. The SUV then hit another police car in front of Super Skate.
A police officer was injured and taken to DCH Regional Medical Center for treatment. He is still in the hospital. His name and condition have not yet been released.
Three other people were inside the suspects' SUV. They were all treated for their injuries and released.
Alabama State Troopers are investigating the crash. They will then turn over their findings to the Tuscaloosa County District Attorney.
