ANNISTON, AL (WBRC) -

An east Alabama mom has been charged with manslaughter after allegedly leaving her four-month-old baby in a vehicle on Friday.

Katherine Papke, 35, is accused of leaving her infant son in a vehicle in the heat of the day on Friday afternoon around 2 p.m. It happened in a parking lot in the 400 block of Goode Road in the Fort McClellan community.

Officials say four-month-old Bennett Owen Smith was found unresponsive in the parking lot. He was transported to Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Police took Papke into custody, questioned her and then charged her with two felonies, manslaughter and leaving a child unattended in a motor vehicle. She was jailed and later bonded out of a $100,000 bond.

The baby's body has been taken to the Department of Forensic Science in Huntsville for an autopsy. The official cause of death has not been released.
