The Alabama Department of Corrections is investigating an inmate on inmate homicide that occurred Sunday, August 11, 2013, at St. Clair Correctional Facility.
The ADOC says inmate Jammy Bell died of stab wounds received during an altercation with another inmate in Dormitory D. An officer responded to the unit and used a chemical agent to gain control of the inmates.
Bell was transported to St. Vincent's Hospital – Pell City, where he was pronounced dead at approximately 9:46 p.m. Two inmate-made knives believed to have been used in the crime have been recovered.
Bell, 43, was serving a 35 year sentence out of Washington County for receiving stolen property, burglary, and assault. He was sentenced December 16, 2003, with 12 years and 21 days time served, including 877 days jail credit.
Inmate Larry Evans Lowe is in custody as a suspect. Lowe, 34, is serving a 25 year sentence for murder out of the Bessemer Sentencing District of Jefferson County. Lowe was sentenced March 2, 1999, and has served 15 years, 10 months, and 6 days.
The ADOC says the circumstances surrounding Bell's death are under investigation through the Department's Investigation and Intelligence Division. An autopsy will be performed to determine the actual cause of death.
St. Clair is a maximum security prison housing approximately 1,340 inmates.
