TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Unity Baptist Church members came together Tuesday to survey the damage after a fire took their sanctuary during a huge lightning storm in Tuscaloosa Monday night.

Tuesday, the church was a total loss. Witnesses say that the steeple appeared to have been struck by lightning around 10 p.m. Eventually, they say the steeple fell and that's when they realized the church was on fire.

Members say they are certainly devestated by what they see here today, but they say they will recover.

"It's just sad for the people thats been here all these years. Cause I mean when something like this happens its just like loosing a child, or a parent. I mean this is really awful, and its heart breaking to all of us. But we'll overcome it," member Jame Howard said.

Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue was here until the early morning hours containing the fire. They say they believe it was caused by a lightning strike, but of course they will continue their official investigation.

As for church members, they are looking ahead to Wednesday night services and seeing what is next for them.
