Teen charged in connection to vehicle break-ins

The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says they have arrested an 18-year-old in connection to vehicle break-ins in the McCalla area.

Deputies say they responded around 3:30 a.m. to a home in the 1900 block of Lakeside Drive in Rock Mountain Lakes to investigate a car break in. The victim told them he had seen car headlights go off in front of his house. He went outside to investigate and found two suspects inside of his son-in-law's truck.

The two suspects ran when they realized they were seen fired two shots when the victim yelled at them. They then fled in a dark colored vehicle. The victim was not hit.

Deputies began searching for the vehicle and found a black Nissan Maxima abandoned nearby. The vehicle was found to have been reported stolen from the Trussville area. It had also been involved in a robbery and police pursuit with Birmingham police.

The 18-year-old was found hiding in an outbuilding behind a residence in the 2200 block of Lakeside Drive. No other suspects were located.

Deputies say they received several reports of vehicle break-ins in the area.

18-year-old Dwayne Deon Thomas of Birmingham faces charges of unlawful breaking and entering a vehicle, 2nd degree theft of property and 1st degree receiving stolen property. He is being held in the Jefferson County Jail on bonds totaling $60,000.
