BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

The Mountain Brook Fire Department is working a fatal house fire on Monday morning.

According to the fire department battalion chief, the fire took place at a residence in the 3700 block of South Brookwood Road. One person was killed in the fire, but the victim's identity has not been released.

The fire broke out around 3:15 a.m. Monday. When firefighters got to the scene, they saw flames shooting from the roof. It took them about an hour to put the fire out.

The Jefferson County Coroner says the female homeowner of the house was not the person killed in the fire. He said it could be a few days before they can release the victim's identity. The coroner says they will use dental records to identify the victim.

Mountain Brook fire chief Robert Ezekiel told FOX6 News he believes the victim is a male.

Police and fire crews blocked off the road while fighting the fire. Traffic to nearby Brookwood Forest School slowed to a crawl during the kids' first day back from summer vacation.

Chief Ezekiel says they have contacted the state fire marshal's office to help with the investigation.
