A 7-month-old baby was killed after being ejected from an SUV this afternoon in Bessemer.
The wreck happened on I-59 North at exit 113, Bessemer police confirmed.
An off-duty police officer driving behind the SUV saw the driver drift into the outside lane and over-correct, causing the SUV to flip over.
Police said a mother and three minors were traveling in the SUV. When officers got to the scene, they found two of the minors wearing seatbelts, and the mother trying to get out of the SUV. The youngest passenger, the 7-month-old baby, had been ejected.
The baby was transported to Children's of Alabama Hospital and later died. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office identified the child as Taleigha Williams of Birmingham.
Police said there was a child safety seat in the SUV, but they do not know if Taleigha was in the seat or had been properly restrained.
The other passengers were transported to the hospital for observation, but appeared to be physically OK, Bessemer police said.
