Job fair offered to veterans in Tuscaloosa

Thousands of veterans are returning home from deployments overseas these days, but the transition isn't always a simple one. That process can often include the job hunting process.

The organization ‘Hire Heroes USA' estimates a million veterans are unemployed in the United States. For young male veterans, recent statistics show one in three is looking for work, which is double the unemployment rate of non-veterans in the same age group.

The Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center will be hosting a job fair today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday. The fair is not just for veterans, but also their family members.

Employers from Tuscaloosa and the surrounding areas will be there. The VA says they will represent a pretty wide variety of career areas. They say military experience is a valuable asset to employers.

"Employers like to hire veterans because they know veterans are hard working, dedicated, loyal employees. And they, of course, have self discipline and things they've learned in the military, and they've proven that through their military service," said Damon Stevenson with the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center.

There will also be other resources available at the job fair for things like vocational rehabilitation, credit counseling and even starting your own small business.
