Jefferson County may be creating its own animal control operation.
At this time, Jefferson County is sharing the cost of animal control with the city of Birmingham. The county owns the building but Birmingham owns the land off of interstate 20-59. The two governments have not been able to agree on a new contract for years. Both have been approving month to month agreements.
Commission President David Carrington said it may be cheaper for the county to go off on its own.
"We always felt we paid more than our fair share of that contract. This looks like a vehicle to get our expenses more in line," Carrington said.
Jefferson County hopes to send off request for proposals for some company to run the county's animal control operation in a couple of weeks.
