A football player at the University of West Alabama and a 12-year-old passenger died Sunday following a 2-vehicle crash.
Authorities say Anthony Robinson, was driving just outside Linden on U.S. Hwy. 43 in Marengo County, when his vehicle collided with a truck.
Both Robinson and a child, Chris Boykin, were killed in the crash. THe driver of the truck was taken to an area hospital but survived the crash.
Robinson, 19, was a freshman football player at UWA slated to be a defensive back. He'd yet to play a game for his college team.
Robinson wore the #10 jersey for the Linden High School Patriots where he was a 4-year starter quarterback.
"Anthony was a tremendous young man, always happy. He had that rare "it" factor that is difficult to explain, but very easy to see," said UWA in a statement. "People were drawn to Anthony and he to them. Very rarely does a freshman impact a team right away, but Anthony had already had a tremendous impact on our football team in a very short time.
"He was a great player, but an even better person. That is so painfully obvious by the way the entire town of Linden and our football team is hurting right now," the UWA statement said. "He embraced the AIE (Attitude Is Everything) mentality of our program and we will continue to press forward because we believe that's what Anthony would want us to do."
Funeral arrangements are still pending.
Alabama State Troopers continue to investigate the cause of the fatal crash.
