TUSCALOOSA, AL (WBRC) -

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox laid out his 2014 operating budget recommendations to the city council tonight.

Maddox is recommending the general fund should be a little over $130 million. That's more than a two percent increase from last year.

We're told city employees are due to receive a cost of living raise but they could pay a little more for health insurance. The city's police department could be getting seven new patrol vehicles and in-car video cameras.

Maddox says he wishes he could give city agencies more money but it's just not possible.

"There's certainly more funding for agencies that I wish we could include...but the reason why this city is so financially strong is because we've had the political will to be conservative and we've had the political will to not spend reserves…and we've had the political will to budget realistically," Maddox said.

There will be a series of budget public hearings before the budget is passed. They will be held in the Daugherty Conference Room as Tuscaloosa City Hall.
