UPDATE: A Birmingham family's search for a missing loved one has come to a happy ending.
Birmingham Sgt. Johnny Williams says that Amanda Sankey, 24, is "home, safe and sound."
Amanda Sankey, 24, has been missing for about a day and her family was very worried. They say she has major developmental delays that cause her to be very trusting of everyone.
They says she never stays away from home long, hasn't had any major family problems, and no criminal or drug behvaior that would cause her to leave. Thursday, they were at a loss.
"I'm so worried," Debbie Nickson, Sankey's mom, said. "I'm so worried that something happened to her because she's trusting."
Nixon says Sankey went with her boyfriend to Snapper's Fish and Wings on Jefferson Boulevard to get some food Wednesday evening around 5:30 p.m. The boyfriend caught the bus afterwards but Sankey never came back home.
"Time kept passing....Nothing. And she doesn't do that. That's not like her," Nickson said.
Her concern is even more intense because she says Sankey has the mind of a 12-year-old.
"She's very, very trusting. She's very sweet. She thinks everybody is her friend. She meets no strangers," Nickson said.
By 6 a.m. Thursday, when the family still hadn't heard anything, they called police. While officers were with them, Sankey called saying she was at Siesta Motel off Crestwood Boulevard in Irondale.
"I told her to look on the door where she was. By the time we got there, the door was open but she wasn't there," Nickson said.
Thursday afternoon, Nickson adn her family went back to the motel. The manager told them Sankey had been there the night before with two men. Nickson says she's praying her daughter shows up soon.
"I know what's out here in the world. And I know what people can do to you and I just don't want anything to happen to my baby," Nickson said.
Sankey's family says she was last seen wearing jeans with a tiger print pattern on the pockets, a beige shirt with brown flowers and a blue Nike book bag.
Sankey is described as 5' 6" tall, weighs 160 pounds and wears glasses.
Anyone with information about the case or who may have seen Sankey should call police immediately.
