The race for Tuscaloosa City School Board Chair is officially over.
Thursday afternoon, Denise Hills conceeded the race to Lee Garrison. Hills lost the seat for chair by 222 votes. Hills says after meeting with her family and legal team, she decided it would be best not to contest the August 27th election results. She added she did this on behalf of the children of Tuscaloosa despite allegations of voter fraud in the district. Hills tells Fox6 News, she'll continue to work closely with the Tuscaloosa City School System.
Below is a statement Hills posted on her Facebook page.
To my friends, supporters, and the Tuscaloosa City Community,
After conferring with my family and legal team, and after much contemplation, I have decided that my best course of action is to not contest the election results of August 27. I do this on behalf of the children of Tuscaloosa.
I have been touched and truly blessed to meet so many of you in the past few weeks, and honored by your support. While a court challenge would likely be successful, it would be prolonged and would not permit me to devote my full attention to addressing the concerns of our community about our children's education. Since this was my promise to you – to speak for all our children in Tuscaloosa – I must put what is best for them above all else.
I have been strengthened by your support in the past weeks, and will continue to speak up for all children knowing that you are behind me. Thank you for believing in me and my plans. We must continue to fight to keep education at the forefront of everyone's attention. Know that I will always listen to your concerns, and convey them to the Tuscaloosa City Board of Education as an active community member attending their meetings. I encourage you to join me at these meetings. With your help, we will engage the board and administration so that they hear and address our concerns. It takes a community working together to improve our children's education. I will continue to work with our schools, churches, and other community groups to strengthen school-community connections long after this election is a distant memory.
