BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn says the team is getting better and he cites the win against his old team, the Arkansas State Red Wolves, to prove it.

"First of all, it feels good to be 2-0," said Malzahn as he began the postgame news conference. "We beat a good football team."

The coach noted that there was improvement to be made in the area of penalties and says that there were a few missed opportunities. Overall, Malzahn says he felt better about Saturday's performance.

"My big deal is consistency. We have to be more consistent with our execution. I do feel like we improved from last week," said Malzahn.

Malzahn says the Tigers benefited from an ongoing momentum throughout the game.

"The tempo at times was a lot better. I think there was a drive going to our left that we got it going. We ran the power and counter a couple of times, got some momentum, scored a touchdown," said Malzahn.

As far as coaching against his old team, Malzahn says it was good to see his old team. He says he wishes them the best and feels many of the Red Wolves will go on to play at the next level.

"It was pretty emotional. It's a pretty interesting deal when you coach against a team that you're close to players. There's bunch of great kids over there, great competitors. It was interesting. It was good to see those guys and I wish them nothing but the best going forward," said Malzahn.

Next week, Auburn takes on Mississippi State at home for their first SEC challenge of the season. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
