The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office says they have a raided an illegal gaming operation in Bessemer.
According to Chief Deputy Randy Christian, three black suspects were let into the establishment around 10 p.m. Sunday night. The men went into the back to play the gaming machines while the owner and other employees were in the front of the building watching a football game. Six other people were already in the gaming area.
One of the suspects came to the front and complained about the heat in the back room. He then pulled a handgun and demanded the owner get on the floor. The other suspects forced the remaining employees to the floor and duct taped their hands before ransacking the room and taking the contents of three money bags.
The owner of the gaming establishment delayed for two hours before calling in the robbery, due to the gaming establishment being illegal.
"After thinking it through for a few hours he decided the greater good was to try and make sure these guys didn't get away with that and hurt someone else. He did report it," Christian said.
No one was injured and the illegal gambling devices have been confiscated. The owner could face promoting gambling and possessing gambling machines charges. Anyone with information about the robbery is encouraged to call the sheriff's office.
