Etowah County Sheriff's deputies say the death of a 3-year-old boy in Altoona last week appears to be an accident.
The child was found in a car outside of his home on Highway 278 West. The boy and his mother had been inside a home taking a nap and the mother told authorities that when she woke up she couldn't find him in the house.
Investigators say the boy went outside and got into an unlocked car. They add that when the mother found him in the car, she administered CPR and called 9-1-1.
The boy died Friday, Sept. 6 at Children's of Alabama.
Natalie Barton, a sheriff's office spokesperson, says parents should double check to make sure children can't easily get into cars on their own. She says investigators are looking into whether rear door child-proof locks were a factor in the boy's death.
