Metro Council has been talking about it off and on for about five years, but members are set to have another discussion Tuesday about allowing limited advertising in city parks.
The council has to pass an ordinance to make this legal, then the parks department would come up with a set of fairly strict guidelines for what kinds of things can be advertised.
The money earned from any ads would go right back into the parks department.
"If we put the signature names of LP Field and Bridgestone Arena on buildings, why couldn't we do similar things to raise revenue for our parks," said Metro Councilman Charlie Tygard.
Still, this idea is getting mixed reviews.
"We just think the park is beautiful. Don't spoil it. I don't know what they have in mind. I guess some types of advertising could be unobtrusive," said park patron Paul Lipper.
"I think we're desensitized to it. As long as there's not something blatantly offending to little kids, I think that's the line that would have to be drawn," said Mason Douglas, of Nashville.
The ordinance will have its second reading Tuesday. It has to be read three times and pass a vote before anything's official.
Even if the ordinance eventually passes, the ads wouldn't likely start until next spring.
