ETOWAH COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Three students were taken to a hospital Friday morning when the school bus they were riding in crashed.

It happened about 7:45 a.m. on Gidley Road near U.S. Highway 278.  A total of 46 students were on the bus. Two students were taken to a hospital by ambulance and a third student was taken to a hospital by car. The injuries, according to emergency workers, are not serious in nature.

The remaining students either went home or to school.

According to authorities on scene, the bus veered off the highway, crossed over a yard, across Gidley Road and into the woods.

Investigators say Jason Shields, a coach at Hokes Bluff High School, was driving. The cause of the crash is under investigation.  The bus driver was drug tested, which is standard procedure.
