Editorial: Severe weather preparedness

The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, October 1.

We are entering our second severe weather season of the year. This year, spring was wet and mild and until just a few weeks ago, summer was more of the same…not really ideal conditions for severe weather. It would be easy to become complacent, but local emergency response teams and local meteorologists hope you won't.

A couple of weeks ago, as part of a state program called "Ready Alabama", J.P., Wes, and the Fox 6 team worked along-side firefighters, police officers and other emergency management personnel in Tuscaloosa, programming weather radios and providing emergency preparedness information to help keep families safe in the event of an emergency situation.

When was the last time you checked the batteries in your weather radio? Do you leave it turned on at night…a time when many severe storms occur? Do you have an emergency kit ready with a flashlight, batteries, water, non-perishable food and a first aid kit? Does your family have a plan for where to go and gather in an emergency situation…a safe place?

Now is the time to prepare before you are faced with the anxiety and the need for quick responses that severe weather and other emergencies inevitably bring with them. In our part of the world known as Dixie Alley, you must be alert and be prepared. Are you ready?
