Government employees flooded Alabama unemployment offices Tuesday and Wednesday following the government shutdown. Furloughed workers want unemployment benefits during the shutdown.
Tuesday 142 people sought unemployment benefits. As of 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, 124 people filed claims.
Communication Director Tara Hutchinson said that number continues to rise throughout the day. On an average day they have about five or six people file claims. That is an increase of about 2,500 percent.
If you are a furloughed employee and want to apply, you must do so over the phone. Call 1-866-234-5382.
You must also have a W-2, a copy of your last pay stub, or an SF-50 when you file.
Meantime, the 532 members currently serving in Congress will continue to get paid during the partial shutdown. It costs taxpayers more than $10,000 an hour to cover Congress salaries. However about 100 lawmakers have decided to refuse pay or give the money to charity, Spencer Bachus, Mo Brooks and Terri Sewell included.
