OUR HOUSE - William Wright is with Marvin's Building Material and Home Centers. He joined us this morning with some advice on how to make your home fire safe. October is Fire Prevention Month. William discussed with us the many ways we can keep you and your home safer from fires. Have working smoke alarms installed on every level of your home, especially outside of bedrooms, in kitchens, and playrooms or basements. Also remember to test them monthly to ensure they are functioning properly as most are powered by 9 volt batteries and never paint over a smoke alarm as this could keep it from working properly. Having Fire Extinguishers located in your home is very important also. Please remember that Fire Extinguishers are meant to only fight small fires. If a fire grows out of control please get out of your house and call 911 from your neighbors house. Since 1/3rd of all house fires start in the kitchen you will want to have a Class K rate Fire Extinguisher located so that it is easy to get to. Other areas of consideration should be garages where a class B rated extinguisher for oil or gasoline fires. Also having a Class C rated fire extinguisher in your home for electrical fires makes good sense. Most fire extinguishers sold are a "one time use only" design. Meaning, if you ever have to use it, discard it afterwards. You should check your Fire Extinguisher 2 times a year to make sure that it is in proper working order. Never use it to test it. All Fire Extinguishers come with either a pressure gauge or a test button.
THE BARGAINOMICS LADY-Judy Bates joined us this morning with some great deals. She found a necklace and earrings set on her last trip to Belk's. It was $25 marked down to $11.99 with another 40% off, so she paid $7.19. Christmas is less than 3 months away. Shop the deals now and spread that gift-buying expense out so you can pay cash as you shop. If you want money to spend, you've got to save money, too, right? It may be tough to find a place paying much if any interest on CDs, but she found a local bank with a couple of good offers. BBVA Compass is offering 1.25% on 27-month CDs and 2% on 60-month CDs with a minimum deposit of only $500. Not that she has any personal knowledge about hair color with her natural red hair, but this was too good of a deal not to mention. There's a coupon in this week's ads for $5 off any 2 boxes of Clairol Nice 'n' Easy or Natural Instincts Hair Color. Rite Aid has added their own coupon for $4 off, so when you buy 2 boxes at RiteAid and present your coupons and your RiteAid Wellness Card, you get both boxes that would normally total $15.98 for only $6.98. And if you don't have a RiteAid card, just ask for one while you're in the store - they're free. If hair color doesn't interest you, they also have a bunch of BUY 1, GET A SECOND ONE FOR HALF OFF deals, like on Olay skin and bath products, Secret Deoderant, and Cover Girl cosmetics. And lastly, if you're looking for something fun and free to do this weekend, there are choices galore within an easy drive of Birmingham. Just a few of the free events this weekend: (1) the Boaz Harvest Festival; (2) the Alabama Frog Level Festival and Car Show in Fayette; (3) the Alabama Butterbean Festival in Pinson; (4) Cullman's Oktoberfest; & (5) the Bluff Park Art Show. You'll find direct links to information on each of these events on the Good Day Alabama page of Bargainomics.com. If you missed any of those, you can find them along with the rest of the segment info on the Good Day Alabama page of Judy's website - www.Bargainomics.com.
