TALLADEGA, AL (WBRC) -

The federal government shutdown is even taking a toll on the great outdoors.

The Talladega National Forest in east Alabama stretches from Sylacauga to Piedmont.

But only essential personnel, including firefighters and some park rangers are still working.

We found ranger stations closed to business in Talladega and Heflin. The Coleman Lake camping area is also closed, and the National Park Service website says a lot of other similar areas are closed.

However, the trails and the forest itself are still open but if hikers need help they should contact 9-1-1 or local agencies not park rangers.
