JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Alabama prosecutors are questioning new sentencing guidelines that are going into effect this week.

The guidelines are designed to ease the state's prison overpopulation by giving lighter sentences to non-violent offenders involving drugs and property crimes.

Tuesday, Jefferson County District Attorney Brandon Falls expressed doubts that the new guidelines will work.

"We would like to have equity in sentencing guidelines across the state. I understand that is important. But we have got to have room enough to send people to prison when they commit a felony," Falls said.
