SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

The Savannah-Chatham Metro Police Dept.'s Interim Chief Julie Tolbert announced Wednesday more changes to the SCMPD command staff.

Southside Precinct Capt. Dean Fagerstrom has been promoted to interim major effective immediately. The position was vacated a week ago when Capt. Mike Wilkins announced his retirement from the department.

Fagerstrom joined the SCMPD in 1983 and was promoted to captain in 1999. Since joining the department, he has commanded department precincts, the Criminal Investigations Division and Internal Affairs, according to SCMPD.

"I have worked with Major Fagerstrom for three decades. He is an excellent leader and is one of the most knowledgeable members of this department. He will be a tremendous asset to the SCMPD's executive command staff," Tolbert said in a statement.

Assistant Commander of the Special Operations Unit Capt. Terry Shoop, will now command the Southside Precinct. Shoop joined the SCMPD in 1986, and was promoted to captain in 2012.

On Wednesday, Tolbert also moved Capt. Henry Wiley from the Internal Affairs unit. Wiley will now serve as the department's Afternoon Watch Commander. Lt. Andre Oliver, who is currently assigned to Internal Affairs, will supervise that unit until a replacement is found.
