BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A Birmingham Police Department patrol car was involved in a wreck on University Blvd. Tuesday morning.

The wreck happened at the intersection of University Blvd. and 24th Street South.

A South Precinct officer was responding to a domestic call in the Southtown housing community just after 9 a.m.

As he entered the intersection, he was struck by another vehicle who failed to see the officer enter the intersection.

Officials say the police cruiser did have his lights and sirens on. Police are investigating the accident and their internal affairs department is investigating as well.

The officer was taken to the hospital for evaluation after complaining of neck pain.

The driver of the pickup truck said he did not see the lights.

University Blvd. going eastbound is still closed at 24th Street. Check back with this story for updates.
