A Marshall County woman is recovering in a Huntsville hospital after being mauled by a dog Tuesday afternoon.
Hospital officials said the woman is in fair condition, which is good considering animal control officers said this was one of the most serious attacks they have ever seen.
53-year-old Donna Copeland was airlifted to Huntsville Hospital after the incident on Turnpike Road just outside of Albertville. Sheriff's officials said Copeland was with the dog's owner, Karen Baird, who was attempting to load the Rottweiler into a vehicle.
The dog escaped the owner and began attacking Copeland, biting her several times on the arms. Animal control officers were called to the scene. They said the dog was difficult to restrain by a control pole due to the dog weighing in excess of 125 pounds, so the decision was made to use a sedative.
"The dog would lunge at you every time you got close to the dog. You couldn't get within five to ten feet of the dog without it lunging or trying to bite you. We had to fix up a dart," said Animal Control Officer Mike Henderson.
The dog was euthanized at a local vet clinic and was sent off for rabies testing.
