A mother and her nine-year-old daughter were killed during a house fire in Wilton early Friday morning, the Shelby County Sheriff's Office confirms.
The sheriff's office identified the victims as Kandace Devon Lee, a 40-year-old woman from Wilton, and her 9-year-old daughter Leah Elizabeth Lee.
The fire started around 4 a.m. at a home in the 700 block of Gunlock Road in Wilton. Deputies said the home was completely involved with fire and smoke when they arrived.
Four people were home when the fire started. The 9-year-old girl was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire. Her mom was taken to a nearby hospital and later died as a result of her injuries.
The other two people were able to escape from the fire.
Brierfield, Dry Valley, West Shelby, Pea Ridge and Montevallo Fire Departments all responded to the scene to battle the fire.
Donzal Stabler lives just around the corner from the Lee's home and knew the victims.
"It's just shocking to hear that. I feel sorry for her and her family. It's just kind of sad to know that that happened because it was so close to home like that," said Stabler.
Stabler says it will be tough on the entire community.
Shelby County Sheriff Chris Curry also offered his condolences to the family.
"It is when something as tragic as this happens that we all struggle to understand it. I am truly sorry for your loss," Curry said in a release.
Shelby County Sheriff's investigators, Alabama Fire Marshal's investigators and the Shelby County Coroner are all working to determine the cause of fire and death.
The sheriff's office says says if could take days or weeks to make a final determination about the cause of the fire, but at this time it appears to be accidental and not criminal.
