GADSDEN, AL (WBRC) -

Churches in east Alabama are on edge after several churches in the Gadsden area have been burglarized.

Police confirm 12 churches have been broken into over the last month.

Police have seen a slight spike in commercial burglaries, but they say it is unusual to see so many churches targeted. Three churches were hit last week.

One of those, New Destiny Christian Church on Goldenrod Avenue in Gadsden, had its $200 safe taken, along with another $150 inside. Thieves also took a television set.

That same week, burglars broke into the North Highland Baptist Church on Princeton Avenue and the Central Avenue Baptist Church, but didn't take anything from either church.

Gadsden police captain Paul Cody says overall, burglaries are almost even with last year.

So far there are no arrests or suspects in any of these cases.
