BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Criminals are always looking for ways to take your money. The Microsoft scam is the latest example and is spreading across the country.

FOX6 News Investigative Reporter Ronda Robinson explains how it works. A caller says you can improve your computer's performance and protect it against viruses for just twenty bucks.

There has been a lot of discussion about the scam. Microsoft.com has even issued a statement.

"Microsoft nor our partners make unsolicited calls to charge you for computer security or software fixes," the company says on their website.

The website goes on to suggest how you can protect yourself from phony telephone tech support scams:

-Never give out your user name or password

-Don't buy software or services over the phone

-If the caller asks for financial information, hang up

If you are worried about falling for these cold calls because your computer really needs some work, try finding a reputable local service provider and conduct business face to face.
