BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

A former Jacksonville State University assistant professor was sentenced to five years in prison today on a child pornography charge.

Jonathan Mark Herbert, a 39-year-old man from Jacksonville, was charged with attempting to receive child pornography after getting caught in an undercover investigation.

In August 2012, Herbert attempted to receive images of child pornography over the internet from someone he thought was a 14-year-old girl, according to U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance. The person was really an undercover police officer.

Federal officials also say Herbert drove to a shopping center in Birmingham where he planned to meet the teenage girl for sex.

Herbert pleaded guilty to the charge of attempting to receive child pornography in January.

In addition to the five year sentence, Herbert will also have to register as a sex offender and serve 10 years of supervised probation after completing his prison sentence.

Herbert was taken into custody by U.S. Marshals after his sentencing hearing on Tuesday.
