A West Birmingham restaurant may be in danger of having its business license revoked after two shootings there this weekend.
Tuesday, city councilor Steven Hoyt called for the closure of Hong Kong Seafood after two shootings within eight hours there Saturday night.
The city council through its public safety committee and Chairman Johnathan Austin have shut down a couple of what Austin calls "venues of violence" in the past year because of repeated incidents at one location, Hoyt said he wants to see the same treatment for Hong Kong Seafood.
"It needs to be closed down, and it oughta be an emergency because it's out of hand," Hoyt said. "These people make a lot of money and have spent little money on making their patrons, their customers safe."
There were two shootings at Hong Kong Seafood over the weekend, first on Saturday night around 9 p.m. when a man was shot in the face and a woman shot in the arm, neither injury was life-threatening.
The second shooting was Sunday morning around 4:45 a.m. two victims were shot in the foot. Police arrested four suspects in that case and the warrants are pending.
Hoyt suggested Tuesday the city isn't doing enough to address this kind of violence and that set off Mayor William Bell just a week after each had pledged a reset of mayor/council relations. Below is a transcript of the conversation between Hoyt and Mayor William Bell.
Hoyt: "We got to clean it up and put some emphasis on crime in this city. There's just too much going on and no emphasis there, and I wanna see some results. I think we have a duty."
Bell: "Are you trying to say the Chief isn't doing his job?"
Hoyt: "I'm trying to say Mr. Mayor it needs to be on your agenda highly."
Bell: "It is on my agenda. I'm not gonna sit back and..."
Hoyt: "You've not addressed this incident from this dais."
Bell: "What incident have I not addressed?
Hoyt: "It's been 3 there."
We tried to contact Hong Kong Seafood's owners for reaction but were unable to reach them for comment.
