The following is an editorial from FOX6 WBRC-TV General Manager Lou Kirchen, first aired on Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013.

No matter what your faith, most of us can agree that we were graced, here on earth, with the presence of a person whose life provided an amazing example of service from which we could all benefit. Mother Teresa's commitment to serving the poorest of the poor and the sickest of the sick with uncompromising humility, with no regard for her own comfort, without fear of intimidation by those in lofty positions is a stunning example of pure power. Because of her great, abiding faith she knew she had nothing to lose but everything to gain for those in her care.

I remember seeing Mother Teresa walk to the podium in the United Nations assembly hall to make a speech. This small, simply dressed, physically unremarkable woman brought leaders from around the world, from all faiths and none, to their feet as one. They listened in respectful silence as she spoke. Her constituency had no money to give or favors to grant and yet her faithful service to them afforded her great respect.

While few of us can begin to understand, much less emulate that kind of selflessness or purity of motive, it would refreshing to see just a spark of that in Washington these days, as the political parties throw insults and blame back and forth, seeming to forget they are there to serve, not only their local constituents but by extension, based on the decisions they make, all of America… a little more humility all around would help. What do you think?
