A married couple is facing elder abuse charges after investigators say they made fraudulent charges on an 88-year-old's credit card accounts.
Jefferson County Chief Deputy Randy Christian says 29-year-old Nora Armstrong and 32-year-old Lee Aaron Armstrong are each facing a charge of elder abuse by financial exploitation. Christian says Nora Armstrong was the victim's housekeeper and sitter. Her husband would accompany her while she worked for the victim. Investigators say the couple obtained access to bank accounts and credit cards of the victim over a period of two years and used them to purchase weapons, clothing exercise equipment and food for themselves. The couple also allegedly purchased cell phones and altered the victim's telephone account to include international calling since Nora Armstrong is from Honduras and still has family there. The stolen amount is believed to be more than $24,000.
The investigation into the fraudulent charges began when the niece of the victim found suspicious transactions on her checking account and credit card statements. The purchases included a firearm and ammunition.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants for the couple on Tuesday and arrested the couple on Thursday morning. They are being held in the Jefferson County Jail on a $15,000 bond each.
