New scholarship honors Prattville musician, mother

PRATTVILLE, AL (WSFA) -

A new scholarship has been established to honor a Prattville wife, mother and musician who died suddenly from cancer.

Carrie Hayes Valentine, 35, was a member of the band The Blackbird Pickers. She was recently diagnosed the stomach cancer and died three and a half weeks later.

Valentine received a music degree from Jones County Junior College in Ellisville, MS. A fund has been set up to go to a music scholarship at the school.

The Mellow Mushroom in Prattville, where Valentine often played, is hosting a "Carrying it on for Carrie" event Thursday night. The fundraiser starts at 6 p.m. and music will be provided by The Blackbird Pickers, The Low-Fi Loungers, Britt Johnson, Zac Martin, Ed Pickett and Jay Hayes. Destiny Ministries will make a special appearance.
