The Tennessee Volunteers started off the game against Auburn looking like they were going to put up a fight, but fell far behind as they were outplayed by the Tigers.
The Volunteers were the first team to find their way onto the scoreboard with a field goal on the opening drive. During the 9-play drive, QB Joshua Dobbs added 30 yards to the drive with a pass to Marquez North, but Tennessee couldn't make it to the endzone. While facing 4th and 7 at the Auburn 22, Michael Palardy kicked the 39-yard field goal.
Auburn answered a series later with a touchdown. Tiger Chris Davis took a Volunteer punt and returned it 42 yards to put the offense at the Tennessee 22. Following a rush for a loss of 3 yards, Nick Marshall connected with C.J. Uzomah for 25 yards and the TD. Cody Parkey made an attempt at the extra point, but the kick was blocked.
Tennessee matched the score on their next possession. A very methodical 11-play drive pushed the Volunteers to the Auburn 25, but no further. Palardy made the successful 42-yard kick, setting the score at 6-6.
A fumble by Auburn's Tre Mason gave the Volunteers a return to the lead in the game. The fumble was recovered by LaDarrell McNeil at the Tennessee 43. A Joshua Dobbs rush in the following drive added 32 yards to the drive and two Rajion Neal rushes later the score was made. Neal rushed 17 yards on the scoring play. Palardy's kick was good.
Auburn QB Nick Marshall wanted to show that there were two quarterbacks in the game that could rush and gained 62 yards on the first play of the following possession. Tre Mason carried the ball the remaining 13 yards for the score. Parkey's extra point tied the game again at 13.
It was at this point Auburn decided to turn on the afterburners. The Tiger defense was able to stop the Volunteer defense after they only gained 12 yards in a 7-play drive. Palardy made a 54 yard punt, but Chris Davis' returned the ball for 85 yards and put another touchdown on the board for Auburn. Parkey added the extra point.
Auburn's next touchdown came from a 6-play drive across 85 yards that ran all over the Volunteer defense. Nick Marshall made the score with a 7-yard rush, the smallest yardage gain in the whole drive. Parkey's extra point set the score at 27-13.
Tennessee wasn't out of the game yet. The Tigers found themselves facing 3rd and 7 at their own 23 when a Nick Marshall pass was intercepted by Jacques Smith and taken right into the endzone and putting Tennessee behind by only a touchdown. The margin didn't last long with Auburn's Tre Mason returning the kickoff for 34 yards and a Nick Marshall rush for 38 yards and the touchdown. Parkey's extra point set Auburn ahead by two touchdowns as the teams headed to the locker room.
The Tigers didn't hold up after halftime. Corey Grant, receiving the kick, ran a whopping 90 yards to start the half of with an Auburn TD. Parkey's extra point put the score at 41-20.
Tennessee tried to follow up on the score, but only found a field goal. An 11-play drive covered 52 yards but hit a roadblock at the Auburn 23 in the form of 4th and 10. Palardy's 40-yard field goal was good.
The Tigers smelled blood and made for another touchdown in the following drive. Covering 55 yards in 8 plays, the steady drive finished up with Tre Mason pushing 4-yards into the endzone. Parkey's extra point put the score at 48-23.
Starting off the 4th quarter, Auburn widened the lead by another touchdown. The 12-play drive covered 73 yards and was steady and strong with Tre Mason and Nick Marshall rushing the whole time, except for one rush by Corey Grant. Mason made the score with a 1-yard rush. Parkey's extra point was good. The remainder of the game went scoreless with the game ending with a score of 55-23.
Next week, the Tigers continue their SEC streak by hosting Georgia at Jordan-Hare stadium. Kickoff time has not been announced.
