Fore Kids Columbus held their 3rd Annual Golf for the Cure tournament to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Children of all ages competed in a golf tournament to raise awareness and funds for Juvenile Type 1 Diabetes.
Stephanie Callahan, board member with Fore Kids Columbus, has a son with Type 1 diabetes. She says the condition differs from Type 2 diabetes in that the patient is insulin dependent, and it cannot be reversed or cured with diet, exercise or medication.
The tournament had five different age divisions, with about 55 children competing for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place trophies.
"Every year, we raise within $2,000," says Callahan. "Every dollar you give to us, over 80 cents go directly to research."
Callahan says the group also contributes toward the upkeep of Godwin Creek Golf Course, where their tournaments take place.
Two children with type 1 diabetes competed in today's competition including Callahan's 12-year-old son, Andy, and 6-year-old Tristan.
Callahan says they're all hoping the event continues to grow, and eventually becomes their biggest annual event, which is currently the Walk for the Cure which raises about $50,000 each year.
