TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Two fire departments responded to a church fire in west Alabama Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were called to Mt. Olive Baptist in Coker just after noon and found the church gym on fire. Church leaders say youth use the space for classes and other activities.

The Mt. Olive Volunteer Fire Department and Northport Fire & Rescue responded.

The church's senior minister wasn't sure how bad thef ire was until he tried opening the gym's front doors.

"So I felt on the door, make sure it was not hot. By the time I started opening it, fire fire blew out the top of the building and all and we could do was back up then," Pastor Tim Tindle said.

Investigator with the State Fire Marshal's Office are working to determine the cause of the fire.
