ALBERTVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

All traffic on US 431 was shut down Wednesday night as emergency crews responded to a structure fire in Albertville.

Fire Chief Robert Terrell said the call came out just before 5 p.m. of a fire at the old Galloway Motors building off Highway 431 near Mall Street. When they arrived on scene, there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the front portion of the structure.

The fire spread into the attic causing difficulty for firefighters, because the structure had three roofs. The chief said the center portion of the roof collapsed during the effort to extinguish the flames.

Firefighters were still putting water on the flames later in the night, trying to allow access to the inside to put out hot spots.

The highway was closed to all traffic shortly after crews arrived on the scene, though northbound lanes were re-opened by 8 p.m. Southbound lanes were reopened just before 10 p.m.

An origin or cause of the fire has yet to be determined.
