TUSCALOOSA COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

FOX6 News has learned the Tuscaloosa Police officer who shot and killed a dog in Cottondale has filed at $10,000 lawsuit against a neighbor he says made false statements against him.

Officer Mike Azwell filed the suit against Deborah Bosch Friday. In the suit, Azwell claims Bosch made "slanderous and defamatory accusations" that have caused Azwell "injury to his reputation in the community."

Azwell, a Tuscaloosa Motorcycle officer, was visiting his mother, who lives next door to Bosch, the morning of Nov. 3 for a coffee break. Azwell says when he got off his motorcycle, two dogs started charging him, showing their teeth and growling.

That's when Azwell says he shot what he thought was a pit bull-Lab mix four times, killing it. Bosch called 911 and told dispatchers what happened. The dog's owners tell FOX6 News that they do not believe the officer's story. TPD released a statement earlier this week saying the shooting was justified.
