CLEVELAND (RNN) - A food drive is being held at an Ohio Walmart, not for the community but for employees who work at the store.

According to ABC News, Kory Lundberg, a spokesman for Walmart, said the location has hosted a holiday food drive the past few years. He said the decision was made on a store level and shows that employees care for one another.

"There's one lady in the store I talked to last week, and she was helped out by this program last year," Lundberg told ABC News. "The situation came because she stopped receiving child support payments. Nobody plans for that. This store rallied around it."

Organization United for Respect, an advocacy group, is criticizing Walmart for asking its employees to donate food to other employees.

"Walmart is asking us to donate food to our coworkers. Why can't Walmart pay us enough so we can feed our families?" The group posted on its Facebook page.

People spoke for and against the retailer in response to the post.

"Well, I'm sorry but I work at Walmart and I can pay all my rent, bills, food and extras, and if they are not paying enough there are a lot of other places to work," Debra Kerr said. "It's how you spend your money, and right now we are getting 10 percent off on food so this helps through the holiday season."

Bonnie Howard-Wiggins said she thought Walmart should give free turkeys or hams to its employees.

"The associate can choose which one they prefer," Howard-Wiggins said. "That would help with the expense of the associate's Thanksgiving dinner."

Walmart has more than 2 million employees company-wide and has been criticized in the past for paying low wages. The retail giant reported $15.7 billion in profits last year.
